Lilly for Life

LillyforLife Award Program
In 1974, Eli Lilly and Company (Lilly) established a 50-Year Insulin Award program to recognize people with diabetes who have been on insulin for at least 50 years. The program was modeled after the renowned Joslin Diabetes Center's award program established in 1970. Since its inception, Lilly has presented more than 1,500 LillyforLife 50-Year Insulin Awards.

In 2002, Lilly expanded its awards program and renamed it the LillyforLife Awards to better reflect the everyday achievements and major accomplishments of all people involved in the diabetes community. The program now includes the LillyforLife 75-Year Insulin Award, the LillyforLife 25-Year Insulin Award and the LillyforLife Achievement Awards.

Living and thriving with diabetes is an ongoing and daily challenge. Diabetes affects nearly 21 million people in this country and is the sixth leading cause of death. By publicly recognizing and celebrating those with and without diabetes, Lilly continues its 82-year commitment to people with diabetes and encourages their ongoing success.

About Diabetes
Nearly 21 million* Americans are affected by diabetes, but one third of those affected do not know they have the disease. Poorly controlled diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease, heart disease, blindness, nerve damage, and non-accident related amputations in the United States. Based on death certificate data, diabetes contributed to 224,092 deaths in 2002.* Because the incidence of diabetes is growing, it is important to continue educating patients about the means to and the importance of managing their disease.
